Rez for sale this week in Horse Deals … A Round Yard session in pictures

As Rez is being advertised this week in Horse Deals Australia’s biggest Horses for sale publication i decided to post a heaps of pics of our round yard session this morning enjoy …

To start the session i put the roller and bridle on with nothing hooked up ... walk trot and canter both ways

Even without anything he goes looking for the contact stretching right down to try and find the contact ... he loves his work :)

To get a bit more impulsion happening I encourage him forward into a bigger stride ... love the way he moves is very comfortable to ride

time to change direction ... a 'good boy woah ' brings him to an instant stop

trot to the right .. with a good froward happening

canter to the right ... such an arab ...must have missed pic of canter to the left

next step is to engage the running reins ... these are diff than side reins as they act more like a pulley system so have diff levels of contact depending on where the horse has there head ... much more like our hands ... compared to side reins which are either all on or all off ... here so can see him stretching down into the contact .. long and low ...he is very relaxed

even in the trot he stretches down and travels very relaxed ... he is very light to ride

canter is a diff story ... here the correct thing to do would be to shorten the running reins .. but i left him and after a couple of circles he started to put his head down and look for the contact

another woah and change of direction ... you can see by the look on his face i have his full attention and hes just waiting to see what the next thing that will be asked ... love this horse

another change of direction ... now hes really moving nicely while still stretching down ... brilliant exercise for building up the top muscles along the back and neck

after a while i encourage him forward more and up into the contact ... he still has the option of putting his head up as u will see with the canter ... but he dosent as he is traveling forward on a very light contact

needs a bit more work on the canter .. as head is still coming up .. but in saying that he has become much more balanced and does not rush the transition ... i think he was having fun as he was alert and relaxed

ended session with some hobble training ... but have to say i think hes had them on is the past as he didn't move a muscle and didn't blink and eye ! ... also interesting to not after a good 20 min session he only has minor sweat on the girth area .... took hobbles off and ended session with a hand full of his fav treat Nutrigrain :) such a good boy ... will be very missed

Hobble Training and Trail Riding … a good weekend :)

Well the sun is back even though summer is over and thought better make the most of it.

After getting 4 rides in this week on Rez I decided I couldn’t delay selling him any longer …. so he is very sadly now up for sale … here is the ad …

http://www.horseyard.com.au/horses-for-sale/19/258911-pure-egyptian-gelding-9yrs-151hh-by-el-arab-nizik

Will definitely miss him had a great ride out yesterday … ended being out for about 3 hours ! and came home with out a drop of sweat … would def be a great endurance horse … 3 hours you say that’s a long ride … and it was … i met some neighbors as i was going out and rode with them along the way til they turned off for home … we continued on and met a lovely young lady ( 16) on a very little pony.

Ended up riding home with her so she could swap horses … she has a very nice anglo mare and very passionate about horses she talked my ear off for hours  … but was all good … ahhh to be a teenager again … where no such thing as a canter more a flat out gallop!!! … was a great test for Rez though … as although he got a bit strong he didn’t get upset when i held him back and let her gallop off ahead … a good test :) She is definitely a good little rider with her mare pig rooting and humping up occasionally .. wack wack with the whip and she was right … was great too watch … so many adults get nervous kids just take it in their stride!! a great ride in all

Today i thought better do a bit of flat work as last 3 rides have all been out on roads or trails due to the ground being so wet … i admit it still isn’t brilliant… but we got a good ride in and hes really coming along in leaps and bounds in transition to canter up and down … striding straight out on correct lead and really starting to relax and carry himself in a good frame … really do need an arena as will never get the best out of him working in long grass!!

As for Jack … this weekend i decide it was time for him to be hobble trained …

The benefits of this can not be over looked .. esp the horses panic response if they ever get caught up in a fence or like wise .. they understand they cannot escape and so do not over react which is when they do the most damage …

For more on the technical side please see John O’Leary’s HORSEPROBLEMS website… here is a link to his PROBLEMS INDEX … an invaluable resource for all different things .. training and medical .

So how did Jack go with the hobbles … well here he is this morning … second session ..

Jack in Hobbles for the second time

I wish I had taken a video of him the first day i put them on him .. it was hilarious !! the look on his face was comical … when he heard the chink he when straight up all four feet … so athletic … then he did a few little rears trying to see what was on his feet … then stopped …lifting one foot at a time seeing if he could escape that way … nope didn’t work … he wasn’t doing anything dangerous so i left him to fig it out for himself … after about 10mins he started chewing and gave a huge sigh … lesson finished he got it !! … took them of and he still didn’t move … waited to be asked … now there’s a first!

Amazing how fast they fig out hobbles

So today was time for a second go … like everything with horses .. baby steps and making sure you have gained a clear understanding with the horse about whats expected.

Today the hobbles were a complete non event … he didn’t move a muscle when i put them on nor while he had them on … occasional stamp at a fly was it … totally relaxed horse …. amazing how fast they can be trained when they are the ones doing the training and we don’t interfere !!!

Was great also to see his reaction to being confined with anything for the first time … as this is the sort of reaction i can expect later on when i start introducing saddle and rider … and makes me feel much more confident that he gives in very quickly and dosent have much fight in him … wants to be compliant ….and does not get upset or stressed out as is generally a relaxed horse … he got a shock first time round but handled the whole new exp very well

Looking forward to getting on with the mouthing and backing of him seeing hes such a character … will be very interested to see if his boldness translates to the saddle … only time will tell there …

I hope everyone got some fun horsey time in over this weekend … take car and safe riding Nic

Hawkesbury Flood … Hooray we were not effected

Well i am very please to report after 5 days of worry and allot of moving stuff higher the flood warnings have finally passed … and we were totally unaffected … much to the surprise of my neighbors whom even last night were freaking me out because i was the only one who hadn’t organized to move the horses over the other side of the street if the flood hit … in saying that though i am also the only one with a paddock on the road which is the highest point as all the land slopes back .

Why wasn’t i too concerned … well i did the numbers … they said the flood was going to hit 12m (above sea level )… and if my floor height is a min of 17m ( don’t know the correct number but council guidelines are 17.3m min floor height) then i had 5m drop it where the water would get … that puts the front paddock at about 14m and my shed at 13 m … so all safe .

I spent most of the morning putting everything back … the horses were more than happy to go out in the main paddock … as after 5 days with 4 horses in a tiny paddock had turned to mud … and this is normally my driest paddock ! chickens were also happy to be back in there pen after living in the galah’s ( big pink and grey parrot .. shes actually about 20 now ) aviary under the house and the galah being moved upstairs to a small cage. Had to make sure no one was going to get wet!!

So today the sun finally came out !! after a mornings re-organizing everyone i thought better head out for a ride … a road ride as paddock soak and trails soaked … which i am discovering means the snakes like coming out and lying on the tracks ! pass!! Rez was great as usual … even riding past paddocks of goats , sheep and cows which i am not sure he has ever seen … he has become such a bold horse you would never think he was an Arab!!!  i also met another neighbour along the way which is always good … had a good horsey chat.

2007 ... this is was what it used to be like when we were in drought only a few years ago ... seems strange we are now worrying about flood ... a land of extremes!!

So very please we were unaffected but my thoughts do go out the the other 75% of the state of NSW who are having a bad time of it at the moment … we like the rest of the world are having unprecedented weather ….and who knows when it will end …Stay safe please and happy riding … Nic

Still waiting too see if it floods

In the last couple of days we have gone from Flood watch … to Flood warning … to Evacuation warning ….

They are expecting Sydneys major dam to spill over for the first time in 14 years in the next couple of hours … when this occurs all the extra water being sent down river could end up in my paddocks or worse as i have a lagoon about 500m down the road which feeds into the river … so if river floods lagoon floods and so do I … just hoping is very minor and am as prepared as I can be moving what i can up higher … the horses are now also in the highest paddock with a gate to the road so can easily get them out if need be…..

Here are some pics i took 24 hours ago …

Creek still a trickle ...

Now here is this morning … the creek is starting to rise but that is normal … you can see how much water is on the ground … if it floods it will come across the paddock as the is the direction of the lagoon…

Creek about double the width ...So much water sitting on the ground now that it is completely soaked through

Very soggy horses .. they shouldn't have their cottons on wet ... but boy didn't i get dirty looks when i went to take off ... they are surprisingly dry underneath and its about 24C so not cold ..

Flood preparation day .. North West Sydney

how high will it flood???

I have lived here for the past 4 years and every year i have concerns about bush fires …  well not now!! the major dams in Sydney havent been full since 1988 but they are now at 90% and will be full in the next few days … the down side of this will be my place is expected to flood

As you can see the house being built in a flood zone is up on peirs … so not worried about water coming in the house … but the shed and the paddock are a whole other story… here is a pic taken of the horses in the paddock a few days ago … and within the next 24- 48 hours they are predicting it will all be underwater!!!

So today i am going to get as prepared as well as i can by moving horses and chicken to highest ground possible … and move anything electric out of the shed … not too forget my horse gear and the ride on mower !!

am i worried … hell yes !! nature cannot be controlled … plan to take pics as we go and keep fingers crossed the water dosent come up too high … i know people pay a lot of money for water views but i think i will pass!!!!

In the next 24hours this could all be underwater!

Progress … and a weekend with no rain !

So its finally the last weekend of summer … normally i would be cheering that we had gotten through another summer with no bush fires … but this year i think the whole of Sydney is out celebrating no rain ! … so i thought i better make the most of it and get in some horse time.

My place is still too wet to ride as the water table has risen so high the water has no where to go … but in saying that i am lucky to have a large flat grassed area across the road … about the size of a 50m circle …. but and open area with bush on 2 side a fence and a road on a 3 rd and the forth side is a big wide track that leads the 200m  too the gate … you can imagine what that ca be like at time imagine having an arena with the exit end completely open!

I took Rez for 2 rides over there in the last couple of days … gee i love riding that horse … he tries so hard and with all the ground work we have been doing is much clearer in what is being asked … just a nice horse to work with and will only be a couple more weeks before i put him up for sale … just want him a bit more confident in his transition into canter he is still getting tense and the head is coming up … but we are now doing canter circles relaxed and slow … but am having to be very careful due to the fact i am riding on a grass surface and after all the rain we have been having the potential for a slip is much increased … time to go door knocking and see if one of the neighbors will rent me their arena for a few hours a week … we shall see …

Also yesterday I gave Jack a bath with an iodine wash it help the little bit of rain scald and put a new cotton rug on him . Both these experiences were interesting . I decided to do it at feed time so he could have a distraction and while the other 2 horses were close by and very relaxed. I wasn’t sure if he had had a rug or a bath before .

He was very worried about the sound of the water in the bucket and kept darting away when i went to brush him … i had him on a long lead with a rope halter … i let him move away then when he stopped moved him back to where he had started and tried again … i didn’t actually move and stayed by the feed the whole time … he got the message really quick , stopped moving around and actually started to enjoy it … next the rug … i lay it over his wither and just went through the same process … with him looking very worried to start with …. while this was happening my mare Flick finished her feed and came over to steal Jacks …. i actually used this to my advantage … and quietly shooed her off  … i didn’t chase her as i wanted the energy to stay calm … Jack was watching this happen and completely forgot about the rug … i then slowly spread it out over his back … he was fine with this … which made me think sometime in the past someone has put a rug on him … he didn’t react at all when i did up the straps … and i was very cautious and observant while doing the back straps … a risky spot to be … he didn’t blink … while all this was going on flick kept creeping over … i just had to look at her to make her stop … Jack was watching this all go on … and you could see his brain processing that i was in fact the leader of everyone …so rug on relaxed horse i took off the halter and waited til he finished to make sure flick didn’t try again … exit paddock.

Its funny how in the future things that become a non event such as rugging have to be very carefully navigated at the beginning … confusion or trauma at these early stages can be detrimental for years to come.

Use every opportunity you have to train your horse the be the best they can be … it dramatically increases their chances of having a good life and always being looked after.

Happy riding and stay safe  … Nic

Meet Jack … my next project

Jack Feb 2012 .. Picked up a few days ago

Jumping Jack Flash … Just turned 4 .. Arabian Warmblood … My next project …first things first will be Teeth , feet, worming … getting his skin cleaned up as he has rain scald and getting some much needed weight on him … will be a total transformation

His confirmation is not the best … he has rather long back legs and a hunters bump already … but hes not here to be turned into a FEI dressage horse! and will make someone a lovely riding horse ….

We had our first ground session today for about 10mins working on ground manners using natural horsemanship principles.. he now does not feel the need to stand on top off me and lunges .. hes a good boy … funny watch them figure it all out … got to always remember to keep sessions short and avoid confusion at all costs … i always want him to enjoy learning .. as Rez has taught me people have the ability to seriously stuff up horses !!

A New Horse and a hopless ISP !

Why is it the soon as I sit down and write the internet connection goes out … just spent two hours on the phone getting it sorted out and the guy just fluked it!! … I have all the luck .. we had the most amazing storm come over late last night … I now know where the expression rolling thunder comes from … it almost sounded like a giants foot steps coming towards us … quite amazing … but seems the whole world is having weird weather so not surprising !

Well have definitely been some changes since last week … as I now have a new horse!

Have been a bit broke lately so decide to have a look around for things to sell .. and had a set of 18 steel pony yard panels which came with my float but haven’t been used much lately … so put them up for sale on ebay … was contacted by a friend and ended up swapping for a horse.

Jumping Jack Flash .. 4yr old Wb/Arab about 15.1 … totally untouched in terms of mouthing and backing … a rare things these days as most people with a 4yr old who don’t know what they doing usually have a go… at least at mouthing not realizing that this is the corner stone of horse training and has a huge follow on effect for the rest of the horses life … as I found with Rez … more about him in a minute.

So if you do have a young horse you want to mouth be careful ! it can make or break your horse and the quality of life they have in the future.

So having Jack here is pretty exciting … hes not in the best condition and has some rain scal and is under weight .. but that’s ok … easily fixed … cant start anything with him til he has had his teeth, feet and worming done … plus some weight. Though will give him a week to settle in then start to do some ground work with him . He likes to stand on top off you and got a shocked when I feed him last night and made him wait til I had at least mixed the feed. Very much looking forward to working with him … from what I have been told he is quite the character !

Should also note that my electric fences are down atm … im a dope and pulled up the wire with the ride on mower … but Jack has obviously never met an electric fence ever ..  I got up this morn to discover that like the mini he just goes straight through them … lucky pig tail posts bend … time for fences to go back on!! Really not a good lesson for him to learn

Took some pics with my phone … but cant get them onto the comp … will take some more with the camera so you can meet Jack J

Well we finally had a break in the weather for a couple of days… til last night .. so took Rez out for a trail ride … such a wonderful horse … he still needs a bit more confidence for his transition into canter  … so that was the goal for our ride .. we must have done about 20 trot ..canter (maybe 10 strides) …trot … transitions .. and gotta say except for the first one where he went to trot faster he was perfect and went straight into a lovely slow canter … amazing how much all the work we had been doing in the round yard has paid off … and that work would be transitions transitions transitions .. in the round yard both free and with running reins … yes going around in circles makes them fitter and more balanced but when you keep asking for transitions it engages their brain better … they have to be constantly paying attention …  work on this for a few weeks and you will see a huge difference in your horse … it doesnt even occur to them to raise there head when you ask for a transition change up or down.. it becomes a none event .. as proven by Rez too me over the weekend .. we still have a bit more work to do on canter ridden circles but it has just been too wet … the issue of having an all weather surface continues to rear its ugly head .. need to win lotto!

So that will then bring Rez to the point where I will have to sell him on L… he has come so extremely far in the last 15 months from a very skinny horse that did nothing but buck … to an absolutely stunning ( he still takes my breath away .. like yesterday when he met Jack neck arched tail high .. amazing!) and very ride able and safe horse … who stands as still as a statue now when mounted and sometimes needs a kick to get going … will miss him greatly and am certainly wont be begging anyone to buy him … will be the best of homes only for this guy …

I definitely think this is going to be the hardest part of all this … forming amazing relationship with these horses then having to let them go … I guess all I can do in ensure they go too great homes where they are well looked after and loved … and more importantly making them the best riding horses that they can be so that someone will always love them and look after them … it’s the ones that have problems that get the rawest deal in life …

But happy riding and loving your horse … pics to come asap!!   Nic

Horse Trail Riding : Risk Assesment

Horse riding in particular out on the trails…. for the everyday rider has to be one of the most dangerous sports you can choose to do . Things are unpredictable and all safety precautions should be taken for the safety of both horse and rider…. especially if you are riding alone … mob phone in the pocket is essential!!

In saying this this morning I went out for a trail ride and did something i haven’t done in a very long time… and that’s turn back for home after not even 10mins as i deemed it just too unsafe.

For the first time in a long time i woke up too sun shine .. Sydney has been extremely wet over the last few months … after 10 years of drought it comes as a bit of a shock all this rain and every thing so green ,,, through the week there was even flash flooding about 20kms away … a bit scary as i live in a flood zone …. So have now have gone from years worth of worry about bush fires to now worry about floods !! a crazy world we live in…. makes me think us humans give ourselves way to much credit thinking anything we could do could effect the climate!!

My lovely arab Rez has only been ridden once in the last few months after hurting himself last year in the paddock (who knows how … not the vet… hurt his wither )and me deciding to put him out for a spell . He has come back great and just after new yr was working with him getting him rider fit lunging with running reins as well as doing a heaps of ground work exercises…. 3 or 4 days a week… Then the rain really started and in the last 4-6 weeks we have had about 5 days where it hasn’t rained !! … the ground is now soaked to the point of being a puddle.

Having no sand areas to ride has been hard… even the round yard is like and ice skating rink it is so slippery . …The last ride i took him on was last weekend and was a very slow trail ride …much like the underwater horse trail ride i went on late last year… with all the trails 4inches under water!! ..fun and a great training opportunity for a horse that does not like water but very slow going.!

Today was much better in terms of water on the ground but my grass arena was drenched and no point wrecking it… so no choice but go for a trail … i was apprehensive when i left as today is Sunday … Gun Club day … i could hear the shots from the house … which do sent usually happen … who knows what weapons they were using!!

I have to say knowing Rez history he was great and let me mount and move off like an old school horse without a blink … so proud of him … we happily traveled up the road to the gate to the national park… though had a good look at a few parked cars that arent normally there …. the saying goes a memory like an elephant but it should be a memory like a horse!! picture perfect.

We did a lovely gate opening and wandered off down the trails … the first strange thing we came to was what appeared to be someone camping off the side of the track … i couldn’t see them only a vehicle but heard banging around and of course so did Rez! … he wanted to stop to have a look but otherwise walked calmly passed … such a good boy … we traveled through some parts of the trail that were still flooded then proceeded at a trot … head down dressage style … why ? well as long as u don’t be soft of them and let them look up every 2 secs which is what they want to do … it is a great way to teach a horse to be focused on you … if you are ever going to compete the horse has to learn to ignore all the scary things that may be going on around them … flowers or even carnival rides and trust in the rider to keep them safe… focus!!

He did fight me a bit as we proceeded to trot … i don’t blame him i would wanna be able to have a good look around too if i heard gun shots and there were things hiding in the bush!! … i have to say he wasn’t forward but he didn’t fight me either after a few strides … we did half a dozen transitions from walk to trot and back with out the slightest head raise … then i heard the reason he wasn’t forward … which is unlike him … Motorbikes!!! and they were close…. grrrrrrrr

In the last few yrs i have been riding in the national park this is only the second time i have come across people riding motorbikes in there … in fact its illegal …. personally i would say out on the trails there isn’t anything more dangerous than people on bikes … they move fast are loud …they don’t hear you and come upon you very fast . In fact riding a motorbike in a horse area is asking to be sued if a rider comes off…. my worst nightmare is a motorbike coming at me on one of the trail which are quite narrow and very twisty.

So that was the point my own sense of self preservation kicked in !! … all things said i knew there were motorbikes in the park , i could hear gun shots and i wasn’t sure if i would come across another camper … just way too dangerous on any horse i would say at that point… especially alone.

I knew Rez wanted to turn around and go back … he usually strides out a big walk but was dawdling … rather than let him have his way…. i halted … back up … turn on forehand and proceed home … use every opportunity you can to train your horse … i knew he would be happy to turn around so used it too my advantage.

Of course the dawdling walk was now a power walk !! … gathered up the reins again a few more transitions just to make sure he was paying attention … a mind focused on home can be a bit more reactive … and i knew we still had to pass the camper again ….was just hoping they had half a brain and didn’t decide to just step out of the bushes ….nope they were completely gone …  i must have been the first person through there this morning and they knew they had been spotted … camping is also illegal !!

By now i had still only been riding about 15 mins … but sometimes taking risks just isn’t worth it … myself or Rez could have been hurt … or he could have been given a scare that put his hard earned confidence back a few steps .

Luckily for me there is a large grass area in the park near the road away from the bikes and campers … so decided to do a bit of flat work … the ground was still a bit soggy so we didn’t get to canter but had a lovely ride otherwise …and was good too see even after having a few months off was able to go straight back to where we left off … but now due to the added ground work training we are much more solid in our lateral work … leg yielding beautifully …has taken any confusion out of the equation and made more solid his obedience…bur now you really have to ride him as 3 sections neck middle end … rein now moves the head but not the body … i lost him through the shoulder a couple of times as he tried to veer towards the exit gate but a bump from the outside leg brought him straight back over … had such a nice ride … but in saying that i didn’t push him too hard and as soon as he had a good try a moved onto a different activity … eg when i asked for a few walk trot and back transitions and he did it perfectly i changed to doing some leg yielding … rather than keeping on gong over the same thing … if i stop he knows he did it right.

So even though i didn’t get to go on the ride i planned … and was looking forward to a good long canter … horses are not predictable animals … you should never take your safety for granted and when things don’t go too plan ….use them too your advantage to teach the horse something new or to back up something you have already taught in a new environment.

For me the joy simply comes from being with the horses … happy and safe riding .. Nic

Btw …. will Blog every Sunday from now on unless something big happens through the week !!
